Frequently Asked Questions
about our Work and the Services We Offer
What
is The Granat Group, L.L.C.
The Granat Group, L.L.C., is a web consulting and
development firm that specializes in creating what we call smart
web sites for law firms and other legal organizations. For an example see:
The Bankruptcy Legal Information
Center. We specialize in creating and distributing
digital legal applications and legal content over the
Internet. The company is based in Baltimore, Maryland.
What
kind of consulting and development work does the company do?
Our specialty is creating digital legal applications that automate the
process of delivering legal services to an end-user client. We are
interested in creating approaches to solving legal problems through the
provision of legal information in digital form.
We also specialize in
helping law firms, corporate legal departments, publishing and media
companies, courts systems and public legal service programs to apply
information technology to improve the delivery of legal services by
substituting digital work for lawyer or paralegal work.
The focus of
our work is to use information technology to not only automate legal services, but to innovate
in the delivery of legal services:
to develop new ways of delivering legal services to clients that result in greater client
satisfaction often at reduced cost.
Where
does the company work?
Everywhere. We are based in Baltimore,
Maryland and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, but our mix of clients in recent years
has been throughout the United States,
How
much does a project cost?
The cost of a project obviously depends on its scope and can range from a
minimum of $7,500 to $25,000.. Sometimes we will co-venture with a client
in return for sharing in the cash flow created by publishing the legal application when it is distributed to consumers directly. We prefer projects
where we can risk our time and resources in return for a future percentage
of cash flow.
What
about proposals?
We do not participate in competitive proposals.
What
about references?
We manage, as joint
venture partners, the US operations of Epoq
Group, Ltd., Epoq US, Inc.,
which in turns operates the following commercial web sites:
The Divorce Law Information Center
MyLawyer.com
The Name Change Law Center
The
Employment Law Resource Center
The District of
Columbia Elder Law Center with AARP
Public legal service clients have included the Maryland Legal Services Corporation (http://www.mlsc.org);
the Project for the Future of Equal Justice and the Equal Justice Network (http://www.equaljustice.org); the Center for Law
and Social Policy; (http://www.clasp.org); and
the People's Law Library of Maryland. (http://www.peoples-law.org);
and Maryland Justice Network' (http://www.mdjustice.net).
How
do clients begin a relationship with the company?
By client we mean a law firm, corporate legal department, court system,
or public legal services agency. The most common process is that, after a telephone conversation to establish the
scope of the project, the client retains Richard Granat for a half-day
planning session to determine whether the project is economically viable;
how much resources the client is willing to invest; and whether there is
an opportunity for the company to participate as a co-venturer. There is
no charge for this session, except for travel expenses, which are paid for
the prospective client.
